As an enthusiast of macrophotography and of Macro lenses, as well as a professional user for my scientific research, I was really curious to try the new Sigma 70mm f2.8 DG Macro that bears the prestigiuous label "Art", meaning a design with no compromises. Thanks to the courtesy of Mtrading, the Italian dealer of SIGMA products, I had the chance to test it on my SIGMA Sd Quattro H (Nikon mount is not available). Here are my user impressions. The lens is compatible with Sigma converters 1.4x and 2x, with some limitations for Af with the 1.4x and as a manual focus lens with the 2x. Lens hood (good) and lens poach provided as usual. Optical scheme (from SIGMAGlobal site) with two aspherical lenses and two ELD lenses. Sturdy, impeccable construction, with no plays, wobbles or anything, along with an refined finish. Solid like a thank but elegant like a limousine. As it can be seen from the photos, and unlike other recent macro by SIGMA, which are all IF (=the lens barrel does not exted at short distances) the new 70mm SIGMA nearly doubles its length at minimum focusing distances. This has some implications: one, positive, is that the reduction of actual focal length at shorter distances is minor, with respect to IF macro lenses. At 1:1 reproduction ratio the actual focal length is 64.5mm, a very good value. Another positive implication is that the lens is less subject to fringing (I never saw in the photos) that an IF lens. A less positive implication is that the working distance (distance between the subject and the front lens) is scarce. This has little relevance for reproduction works, still life and the like, but may be a problem with skittish critters or on the field, where one has to deal with the tripod among twigs, spider webs, roots and so on. Comparison between the working distances at 1:1 of the 70mm macro Art (above) and the 105mm macro OS (below). On the inner cam are signed the reproduction ratios and the corresponding focusing distances in feets and meters. Autofocus. Macro lenses due to their focal excursion are never fast, and so is the 70mm, and it is normal, the mai limit is the camera sensor with the Sigma Sd Quattro H, however the autofocus is precise once there is enough light and/or contrast. Messa a fuoco manuale Manual focus. The focusing ring is wide and with the right resistance, but keep in mind that the focus is a "focus by wire", that is the focusing ring does not move any lens group, rather it sends inputs to the camera processor who regulates focusing electronically. This means that the focusing ring does nothing with the lens detached from the camera or with the camera "off". For this reason there are no distance markings on the focusing rings, they would make no sense. In any case manual focusing on the Sd Quattro H is good, thanks to the wide excursion of the focusing ring, to the focus peaking and the possibility to enlarge the focus area. I would say that focus by wire renders at its best on a mirrorless camera. Niente indicazioni delle distanze. No distance scale. The italian site of SIGMA reports as follow (translation is mine): "To gain hig quality results at any distance the lens offer a floating focusing mechanism based on two groups. This feature reduces aberration and allows quality results at any shooting distance". It is true, this lens shines. Tried on a Foveon sensor, results are nothing less than excellent both at short as well as at long distances, with no noticeable differences. Niente aberrazioni, nè fringing. No aberrations, no fringing. My impression is that this lens offers a really superior quality from infinite to reproduction ratios close to 1:1, where it remains anyway excellent. Ammonite (6cm) 100%crop. Stunning. Sezione di un osso. Section of a bone. And this is the 100%crop! A distanze lunghe. At long shooting distance. Crop 100%. Crop 100%. Probably the Foveon sensor plays a part in this, but the result is simply stunning. I am repeating myself, I know. Resa dei colori? Colour rendition? The quality remains the same (excellent) from the center to the border of the frame (on the APS-H sensor of my SIGMA Sd Quattro H) even at full aperture. Under this aspect it is better than the 105mm f2.8 OS, which is a great lens. In conclusion: for still life, food, jewelry, mineral, flowers (and fossils!) , it is a superlative lens, especially on a SIGMA Sd Quattro/QuattroH. Excellent as well for some kind of urban photography/landscape. And... if your models do not get angry with you for the razor-sharp, unforgiving rendition of any skin imperfection, you might also use it for portait . The only limit I found is the same of all short macro lenses, the working distance is similar to that of a 50mm macro; it may be a problem for insects or on the field. For anything else is a great, great lens. My sincere thanks to Mtrading, the Italian dealer of SIGMA products for allowing me to try this lens.
