Agli inizi degli anni '60,l'USAF commissionò uno studio,per un bombardiere supersonico,volto a sostituire i B-52 entro il 1980,noto con l'acronimo LAMPS ( Low Altitude Manning Penetrate System), poi cambiato in AMSA ( Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft) nel 1965.
