Il Micio della Grumman

A seguito del fallimento del programma TFX,volto a dare un sostituto comune ad USAF ed US NAVY,dell'onnipresente F-4 Phantom II,la Marina USA avviò li programma VFX che venne aggiudicato dalla Grumman.Il prototipo volò nel 1970 e nel 1974 il primo gruppo operativo, con il VF-1 "Wolfpack"  e il VF-2 " Bounty Hunters" , compì la sua prima crociera operativa in sud-est asiatico sulla portaerei USS Enterprise CVN-65. La macchina era molto prestante ma aveva il tallone d'Achille nei motori P&WTF3
