Il calabrone dell'US NAVY

Nella seconda metà degli anni '70 la US NAVY si ritrovò nella necessità di sostituire i validi ma anziani F-4 Phantom e alcuni aerei d'attacco come gli A-4 e gli A-7.La risposta fu l'adozione del McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet.Già la dizione indicava che il velivolo era dual role,ovvero caccia (F) e velivolo d'attacco (A). L'aereo era il derivato navale,molto modificato,dell'YF-17 cobra della Northrop che era uscito sconfitto dal concorso per un caccia leggero per l'USAF da affiancare all'F-15
