Nel dicembre del 1971 i Deep Purple arrivarono a Montreux con un progetto semplice: registrare un disco dal vivo in studio, riducendo sovraincisioni e artifici al minimo. Avevano affittato il Rolling Stones Mobile Studio e scelto il Casinò cittadino come sala di ripresa.
